Chin Augmentation

Chin augmentation surgery is used to increase an underdeveloped chin. This is often performed by placing an implant directly on the bone. A small incision is made inside the mouth or beneath the chin's skin. Once the implant has been implanted, the incision is closed with sutures. Mild edema usually lasts for a few days, and patients can usually return to work within a week.

Chin surgery also known as mentoplasty, is a surgical treatment used to remodel the chin, either via implant enhancement or bone reduction surgery.

Plastic surgery and other minor operations are frequently performed on the lower jaw line and chin area to improve facial proportions and boost confidence and self-esteem. Board-certified plastic surgeons routinely recommend these procedures to restore the harmony of facial features and the chin/jaw/cheek/forehead balance.

In some cases, a bone from the jaw can be pushed forward in an operation known as mentoplasty or genioplasty. Shaped silicone implants can also be used to give the chin additional projection. In contrast, bone can be removed to reduce an abnormally protruding chin.

Additionally, changes to the upper and/or lower jaw may be recommended for enhanced chewing dynamics and occlusion or how the teeth fit together. These processes can be basic or extremely complex.

Our plastic surgeon will prescribe chin surgery to a patient in order to establish better facial proportions, as the size of the chin can exaggerate.

When an implant is all that is required to round out the chin:

  • You could be sedated or under general anesthetic. Alternatively, you may be given medication to numb the region as well as medication to calm and sleep you.
  • A cut is made, either within or outside the mouth, under the chin. A pocket forms in front of the chin bone and beneath the muscles. The implant is inserted.
  • The surgeon may utilize genuine bone or adipose tissue, or a silicone, Teflon, Dacron, or newer biological implants implant.
  • Stitches or screws are frequently used to secure the implant to the bone.
