Adolescent Gynecomastia

Adolescent Gynecomastia

Are you a teenager with larger breasts?
Do you think your chest area is too fat?
Does your chest look larger and plumper than your classmates?
Do you go through everyday humiliation because you have moobs?
Are you looking for a solution to get flatter and better chest?

If you think you can relate to the problems mentioned above or if you are suffering from one of these issues, then in medical terms, you have what is called- Adolescent Gynecomastia.  Although gynecomastia is a common finding in adolescent men, its psychological impacts are quite serious. Along with making boys self-conscious about their personality and image, this condition develops a certain mental fear that they may get rejected in the backdrop of a social system, which may just mock at their problem than understanding it and providing support.

Considering the fact that the teenage period is a formative period of any child, it is important to deal with the child’s apprehensions with a sensitive approach. During the period of puberty, adolescent men suddenly become very conscious about how their body is developing and in most cases, they try to create an image in their mind, which they constantly want to be associated with. When they realise they have a condition like adolescent gynaecomastia, then instead of looking for a solution they tend to hide the problem.

Gynecomastia surgery along with liposuction can be a cure for gynecomastia in adolescent males; however, there are chances that the symptoms may persist. And hence, it is extremely important to find a skilled surgeon and have a detailed conversation with him/her about your apprehensions. A pre-op consultation provides you the needed peace of mind and you can face the surgery with hassle-free mind.

Persistent adolescent gynecomastia occurs when there is a family history of gynecomastia and thus, such cases take long to suffice the desired results. It is recommended that one should do a thorough research about this condition, do some self-evaluation in order to understand the problem better.

ADOLESCENT GYNECOMASTIA PROCEDURE

After evaluating the Type of Gynecomastia you are suffering with, your plastic surgeon will help you understand the procedure. Generally, the breast tissues are categorized into two kinds – Glandular tissues, which are dense and firm and Fatty tissues, which are soft.

The ratio of these both tissues varies from person to person. If the fatty tissue is excessive, liposuction may be needed whereas if the glandular tissue is overboard then the excess of it can be surgically removed with a scalpel. At times, a combination of both surgeries may be required to treat Gynecomastia in adolescent men.

MINIMAL RISKS

This Gynecomastia surgery is carried out under general anaesthesia although local anaesthesia may be needed along with sedation. The result is immediate along with temporary scarring, swelling and bruising which fades out over the next four to six weeks. Pressure garments and pain medication will be prescribed and a healthy lifestyle will be advised. Complications are rare and not really severe. A good pre-op consultation eliminates any risk of complications.

POST-OP RECOVERY AND CARE

You may have to deal with some level of discomfort after the Adolescent Gynecomastia treatment is performed.  Tenderness, numbness, stiffness are some signs. Since the result of the surgery is immediate, you may experience temporary scarring.

Follow-up visits will be required. The surgeon will check your progress and suggest changes in your lifestyle accordingly. You have to bear in mind that the improvement will be slow but steady and you have be patient towards the changes.

You need to eat healthy food and take adequate rest. Exercise won’t be recommended to you immediately after the surgery as the body needs time to heal. However, in order to maintain healthy weight, you will have to follow a diet and exercise pattern suiting your needs and lifestyle. Avoid smoking and taking alcohol. You should keep clean. It is also important to avoid any heavy physical activity. Also while resting, lay down in a proper position, mostly upright.
