Metoidioplasty

Metoidioplasty

Metoidioplasty, also known as a metaidoioplasty, is a gender-affirming surgery for transgender men and non-binary individuals. The procedure involves constructing a functional phallus by releasing the ligaments that hold the clitoris in place, allowing it to enlarge and extend, resulting in a small phallus. It may also include the creation of a urethral extension using a segment of the patient's own tissue, which allows for standing urination.

The procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia and can take several hours to complete. Recovery time can vary, but most patients are able to return to normal activities within a few weeks.

It's important to note that metoidioplasty is a complex procedure and not all surgeons are experienced in performing it. Therefore, it's recommended to seek a surgeon who is experienced and trained in gender-affirming surgeries.

It is important for patients to have realistic expectations about the outcome of the surgery and understand that the size of the phallus that can be constructed is relatively small. Also, the results of the surgery will not be perfect, and additional procedures such as phalloplasty or scrotoplasty may be needed to achieve the desired results.
